Timber Species
All of the timber we supply is grown and harvested from local forests within the South West, sometimes just on our doorstep. Any of the timber products you find on our website as well as custom orders can be sawn from the timber varieties below:
Larch
Larch is a very dense softwood and one that is very popular for outdoor use and cladding. It's density and high resin content makes it very durable and rot resistant. Larch is also a good option for external framing for the reasons above but due to stress and tension within the logs this can sometimes result in slightly bent timbers, making working with larch more tricky for framing purposes. Fresh sawn larch has a deep yellow / orange colour weathering to silver over time with an attractive grain structure.
Douglas Fir
Douglas Fir is a great choice for any framing projects and is also well suited to external use. It has an excellent strength to weight ratio and is easy to work with, taking screws and nails well. Douglas Fir can also be used as a cladding timber with its attractive deep orange / red heartwood with contrasting lighter sapwood weathering to silver over time. Douglas Fir is a great option for pergolas and framed porches etc.
Western Red Cedar
Western Red Cedar is a highly popular and sought after timber for all external and cladding purposes. Naturally rot resistant and also repellent to insects. Striking sweet aroma and red colour when fresh sawn weathering to silver. Very stable timber which reacts well to changing climate conditions.
Western Hemlock
Our cheapest timber, Western Hemlock is well suited to a variety of applications internally and externally although it is not as resistant as our other timbers. Light in colour with an attractive knotty appearance. Hemlock holds nails well and is stable. A good option for framing timber.
